trades in his Marvel superheroics for actual World War II heroics in the trailer for
In the movie, which is based on a true story, Rudd plays the titular catcher, Moe Berg, a former athlete and Ivy League graduate who speaks seven languages. He’s recruited by the U.S. espionage apparatus to go to Italy and track down scientist Werner Heisenberg (Mark Strong) to see how close the Nazis are to developing the atomic bomb — and make sure that the Americans do it first.
It’s a more dramatic turn for Rudd than his work in “Ant-Man” and other Marvel flicks, or comedies like the “Wet Hot American Summer” revival or the “Anchorman” movies. But he’s certainly proved capable of it in the past and he’s surrounded by a great cast, including Jeff Daniels, Sienna Miller, Guy Pearce, and Paul Giamatti.
“The Catcher Was a Spy” opens in theaters June 22.
