It’s no secret that Marvel is making a third “” movie, scheduled for release in 2020. It’s set after the events of “ ” and “Avengers 4.” But now that many fans have seen “Infinity War,” well, they have questions.
has talked about his plans as writer and director of Vol. 3, that “it will help to set up the next 10, 20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters.”
(Peter Quill/Star-Lord) posted about Vol. 3 in a birthday note to Pom Klementieff (Mantis), saying he was excited to get back to work on the movie:
However, that led to some questions.
SPOILERS AHEAD FROM AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.
So … is he basically confirming that Star-Lord doesn’t stay in the dust? We knew we weren’t done with the vaporized crew in this world or another, but are we all speaking openly about it?
“Infinity War” ended with Star-Lord as one of the 50 percent to be dust-busted by Thanos. Also, earlier in the film, he botched the plan to remove Thanos’ gauntlet because he was so upset at Gamora’s death.
Gamora was one of the deaths we figured would stick after “Infinity War.” She didn’t turn to dust in the end, she was sacrified so Thanos could get the Soul Stone. But maybe her story isn’t done either?
added this note about Vol. 3 to its May 2017 piece last year on Vol. 2:
“James Gunn has already started writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to complete his trilogy, discussing the story with Pratt and having ‘some pretty intense conversations’ with Saldana about a significant role in the threequel. The only travels Gunn has on his docket in the near future, though, are relaxing ones to ‘get my head on straight after three years of waking up and going to sleep and thinking about a talking raccoon.'”
His name is Rabbit, sir.
Zoe Saldana — who just got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, congrats! — toldin a non-spoilery “Infinity War” interview that it didn’t feel like a goodbye on the set when they were done filming because she knew they’d be back later this year for additional “Avengers 4” filming.
So was she being sneaky —— to avoid the spoiler of Gamora’s death? Or will she indeed be back with the cast for additional filming for “Avengers 4” and maybe even “Guardians 3”? It’s possible Gamora could return as a vision or in a flashback. It’s also possible she didn’t quite die for the Soul Stone.
Saldana was candid about Gamora’s death in a spoilery talk with the, but wouldn’t confirm anything about her future:
Can you tell us anything about whether Gamora will be making an appearance in the “Infinity War” follow-up due next year?
I don’t know. [Laughs] For the sake of the devoted fans out there — we don’t want to rob them of an amazing experience. It’s all for them that we do what we do and we also protect what we do.
Was it sad to say goodbye to Marvel after all these years?
Yes and no. It was sad, of course, because I think that we all suffer from FOMO. There is a fear always of missing out, but I’m so happy that I got to play a part in the Marvel Universe, and I also got to play a character that — it has been brought to my attention — is seen as a great role model for young women. And also for young boys. I live for that, that’s why I do what I do. So I guess I’m going to cry all the way to “Avatar,” you know?
So she’s done? Not done? Maybe done? She could give lessons to Ruffalo and Holland — especially since she was the one to float the idea of “Infinity Gauntlet” as the “Avengers 4” title when we now know.
Whatever happens, “Avengers 4” is coming May 3, 2019, and “Guardians 3” will film next year for its release in 2020.
