makes his directorial debut with the movie, in which he plays washed-up country singer Jackson Maine, who discovers and falls in love with a rising artist named Ally (Gaga).
“I don’t sing my own songs. I just don’t feel comfortable,” she tells him when he asks about performing her original music. “Almost every single person has told me they like the way I sounded but they didn’t like the way I look.”
He certainly likes the way she sings and looks and pushes her to take the stage at one of his concerts. And of course, this being Lady Gaga, she blows everyone away with a triumphant rendition of “The Swallow.” But as Ally’s star rises, Jackson struggles with internal demons and their relationship begins to break down.
It’s a story that resonates for all generations. It’s been remade twice before, in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason and in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. No doubt it’ll be updated again in 20-30 years.
